Tattoos of the Euro and Copa América Finals

We have already taken a deeper look at some of the amazing work of art adorning some of the national football team of Italy, along with the personal pieces of England forward Raheem Sterling. However, it would be amiss of us to note the final of the Euro 2020 taking place Sunday night at Wembley. The Italian team alone could make up a few weeks of posts with the likes of injured Leonardo Spinazzola, Federico Bernardeschi and Ciro Immobile sporting at least one full sleeve each. 

Jordan Pickford, England’s goalkeeper, is not far behind with a full left arm sleeve of his own, featuring traditional motifs of daggers, roses and compasses. Defender Kyle Walker is also pretty covered, including a tribute to his grandfather who introduced him to football, the foot and hand print of his oldest son, and a touching piece of an angel carrying a baby symbolising a child his sister lost.

Will Messi get a tattoo to celebrate first win with Argentina?

As previously stated, both the Euro final teams make up ample fodder for a tattoo blog (we will leave all commentary on the actual game, play, and predictions to other outlets). However, there was also another championship final played in South America yesterday, Copa América, that finally saw one of the greatest footballers of all time, Lionel Messi, lift a cup with his national team. 

Messi has, among many other pieces, a portrait of Jesus, one of his mom, a lotus, the window of La Sagrada Familia in Messi’s adopted home Barcelona. Like many of his colleagues, the Argentinian legend also has several pieces celebrating the relationship to his wife – a depiction of her eye, matching king and queen crown tattoos, and a pair of red kissing lips just above his left hip. It is quite probable the Argentinian star will choose to commemorate his first international championship title with another piece of body art. We shall have to wait and see.

Neymar’s superheroes

While the themes of family and religion are strong with the footballer tattoo aficionados, and of course, Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s and Memphis Depay’s full back lions are cool, our favourite pieces and tributes might be the ones that Brazilian superstar Neymar has on his back.

The most expensive player in the world has chosen to offer his shoulder-blades to black and grey depictions of Spiderman and Batman. While the Marvel and DC heroes may occupy different universes, they make for beautiful and inspirational pieces spread out across the footballers back underneath the word ‘Blessed’. While Neymar and Brazil may have lost to Messi and Argentina in Saturday’s final, we think Neymar might just take the tattoo trophy.
